- Art as Experience by John Dewey. Perigee Books, 2009. Thoughtful exposition on the nature of experience
- Design of Everyday Things, The by Donald A. Norman. MIT Press, 2013. A book that introduced the issues of designed products and their use to a wide audience.
- Designing Interactions by Bill Moggridge. Excellent, beautifully-designed book which tells the story of interaction design through numerous interviews with key people. MIT Press 2007.
- Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things by Donald A. Norman. Basic Books, 2005. Commonly referred to book about the role of emotion in our perception and use of products.
- Human-Machine Reconfigurations: Plans and Situated Actions by Lucy A. Suchman. CUP 2007. Influential book on the rich situated nature of human activity and use of technological artifacts
- Reflective Practitioner, The: How professionals think in action Donald Schön. Basic Books, 1984.
- Sketching User Experience by Bill Buxton. Morgan Kaufmann, 2007. Makes the case for sketching and illustrates how it works in practice. See also the associated Workbook.

- Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden and Jill Butler. A glossy, well-illustrated encyclopædia of design principles. Rockport Publishers, 2010.
